Topics include common myths about children's writing, children's book categories, elements of successful stories, manuscript format, submission strategies, contract negotiation, the publishing process, career building, and children's writer resources. Also included are specialized subjects such as querying for multiple manuscripts, promoting a first book, and designing a Web page.

The book was okay, but I guess I expected more info than I received from reading it.

5 out of 5 stars AN ESSENTIAL BOOK FOR CHILDREN'S WRITERS   February 14, 2009
Barbara B. Wallace (McLean, VA)
With 25 published books (and a few awards thrown in), I thought I probably knew all I needed to know about writing books for children. How wrong I was! I happened accidentally to find THE BUSINESS OF WRITING FOR CHILDREN WHILE BROWSING AMAZON, and thought to myself, "Why not?", and ordered a copy. It was the best idea I've had in a very long time. I KNOW this book is going to help me with further books, and with the market as tough as it's getting to be, I think we writers and wannabe writers need all the help we can get. I can't recommend Aaron Shepard's book highly enough. Run, don't walk, to the nearest order form, and order a copy. You won't regret it! - Barbara Brooks Wallace, who wrote PEPPERMINTS IN THE PARLOR, and other books.

5 out of 5 stars Everything I'd hoped for, and then some!   August 23, 2008
Hannah K. Knott (Spain)
This is an excellent book for aspiring writers who want to publish a children's book, rich with advice and seasoned with experience.
I found it to be thorough, honest, and enormously helpful. Not only does it contain all the information I was looking for, but it also contains answers to questions I hadn't thought of... plus lots of helpful hints.
My copy of it is already "marked up" (the highest sign of appreciation for any book of mine) with notes and high-lightings. I've already read it twice and I know I'll be reading it again.
-Hannah K. Knott

All the other books like this are 1000 pages of self-indulgence by their authors. Aaron Shepard keeps it short and to the point.
